Goodness
GOODNESS speaks of the grief associated with letting go, saying goodbye, transition and loss. There is always some wisdom and joy found intertwined with suffering, and I believe our responsibility is to be curious about what suffering brings.
Goodness
When goodness looks like going
Leaving all of this behind
Tears they won’t stop flowing
But with bravery inside
Step out from behind the shadow
Into ever-changing light
When goodness looks like going
Love is walking close behind
When goodness looks like believing
Your heart can be made whole
And courage costs you everything
Walk into the unknown
Westerlies sing in dreaming trees
Where promises abide
When goodness looks like believing
Love will keep the hold
When goodness looks like heartache
In new and noble ground
Tears and salt and sand and sea
Become a lonely howl
Trust the work of suffering
To lead you to be found
When goodness looks like heartache
Love becomes the sound
When goodness looks back at me
I’ll be looking to the west
To send prayers and songs to you
To shower you with rest
Two babies on each hip will laugh
And bring joy inside your chest
When goodness looks back at me
Turn your face back to the west
GOODNESS was written for my best friend when she moved back home after a glorious 6 years together here in High River! I was so grateful to have had her company and friendship, only three blocks away, during the hardest years of my life. I watched her become a newlywed, then a mother and I was so honoured to have shared those years with her and her family.
