Ditch Water

There is an “in-between” place
where the ditches are full
but the land has not yet turned green.

The frost has wretchedly long fingers here
grasping at the continent’s spine
running north and south.

Remember when you abandoned us?
With the spring runoff tumbling
into the new land all arms and legs and decisive.

Did you find a low spot or was the ground so thirsty that it drank all of you?

Here comes the rainy season - rolling in west of this place.
We run out with towels to coddle the vegetable shoots
and wonder what happened to you?
